KARATE & SELF DEFENSE

Karate is a traditional martial art, a system of self defense, control and composure, intended for the overall development of a human being.

At South Bay Gymnastics, We train in these traditional ways of the Shorei-ha Goju-Ryu Karate-do.  We welcome all, to attend our training

sessions and experience the real Karate -do spirit.

Instructor: Les Heri Sensei

Les Heri was promoted to the rank of Yon-dan (4th degree black belt) by Michael Robinson Sensei, on behalf of the Okinawan Goju-ryu Karate-do Federation. In addition, Heri Sensei has been awarded the rank and title, Shihan (teacher of teachers) certificate. Heri Sensei teaches over 300 students a week in 5 cities in the Los Angeles area.  Heri Sensei has 30 years of martial arts training under his belt. He began his training in 1974 in Tae Kwon Do with Master Richard Chun in New York. He furthered his training with Shihan Victor Vega in the style of Japanese Goju-ryu karate-do. Shihan Vega also taught Heri Sensei aiki-jitsu and the art of Iaido.

Schedule and Description of Classes

 

Junior classes ages 5-16 Tuesday and Thursday 4:30--6:30pm and Friday - Kata Class 5:30-7:30

Running, jumping, rolling, crawling, tumbling, kicking, blocking, punching, and yelling. Students learn group participation skills. These skills allow them to  interact with their environment (and its inhabitants) with greater ease. Communication and social skills such as personal introductions will be discussed and practiced. Personal safety, bully and peer pressure strategies will be covered as well as self defense techniques will be practiced and improved upon. Uniform and safety equipment is required. Personal safety choices (peer group and personal attacks) will be addressed, discussed and practiced.  The goal is to prepare the student to enter the teenage years with the skills, confidence and awareness required of us in the world today. In addition , this program will pave the way to the Black Belt Academy Level classes in which they will study traditional Goju-ryu Karate-do and earn belt ranks on their way to becoming a  Black Belt.

 

Adult Karate-all levels Tuesday 6:30-8pm and Thursday 6:30-8pm  Kata-Friday 6:30-7:30pm

Traditional  Okinawan Goju-ryu karate-do class. This class includes, formal seated meditation, warm-ups, drills in stepping, blocking, striking, kicking and punching as well as kata. With consistent effort, advance through the ranks on your way to black belt. Uniform and safety equipment is required.

 

Traditional Goju-ryu Kata Class  Open to juniors and adults---all ages and all levels

Traditional Goju-ryu karate-do kata class. Kata is the fundamental basis of a martial art.  It is a living encyclopedia of movements handed down from generation to generation.  This class is very valuable for students to sharpen their kata in preparation for testing. Great activity for parent-child bridge building. Uniform is required.
